Gøsta Esping Andersen's three welfare models

1) The universal model (or the Scandinavian model)

How much redistribution? A lot.

Who gets social benefits? Everyone – they are universal.

Political ideology? Socialism.

Which countries? The Scandinavian countries, i.e. Denmark, Sweden and Norway.

2) The residual model (or the Anglo-Saxon model)

How much redistribution? Less than the universal model.

Who gets social benefits? The poorest than would not be able to support themselves. You insure yourself.

Political ideology? Liberalism.

Which countries? The Anglo-Saxon countries, e.g. The USA and the UK.

3) The selective model (or the Central European model)

How much redistribution? Very little.

Who gets social benefits? Those who are employed. You are to make private insurances on the private insurance market.

Political ideology? Conservatism.

Which countries? Among others Spain, France, Germany and Italy.
