P.E.E.-method

The PEE-method is a good method to use when you are writing in an essay.

PEE stands for Point, Evidence and Explanation.

Point

What is your point? State your idea or argument clearly and concise and remember it must be relevant to the task/question.

Evidence

This is where you demonstrate how you can support your statement by referring to a part of the text.

You cannot just claim something without being able to prove it – when you are writing an essay this piece of evidence is most likely a quotation.

If the evidence is a quotation it need not be too long – try to select only what is crucial to prove your point. As a rule of thumb it should be around 7 or 8 words and it is important to clearly indicate when you have quoted something by using quotation marks (" "). Try to avoid repeating exactly what your point said in your quote – do not have a point that says "The girl was very happy when he picked her up" and then a quotation that says: "The girl was very happy when he picked her up from the gas station and she smiled contently."

Explanation

This is the analysis. You explain how your evidence supports your point. Again, avoid iterations like in the E-part.

The order in which you write PEE is not crucial – just make sure your essay is coherent and relevant to the task.

Example:

From an essay on "The Silver Bell" by David Evans:

She is overwhelmed with the new situation in the country and she is worried that the colored South Africans are going to retaliate the Boers because they hold a grudge. That is a genuine possibility that she has considered: “The green stare had taken in the row of tinned food which, like the overflowing basket of unironed washing, had been waiting for Beauty to tidy them away before anyone called. ‘Just taking precautions, dear’” (p. 113, ll. 6-9). This shows that she has taken precautions because she is timid and fairly agitated. It seems like she is well aware that the country is going to change and there is nothing to do about it so she has made up her mind to let the chips fall as they may.
